George Soros, the multi-billion dollar businessman, political activist and donor is heading to Washington DC in order to speak at the first Democratic Alliance meeting since the fateful election of Donald J Trump to the presidency of the United States. Alongside Soros will be some of the most powerful people in the Democratic Party such as potential DNC chair Keith Ellison alongside House Minority Whip Nancy Pelosi.
Soros is expected to give a widely awaited speech on time.com regarding parallels he has seen in his life such as the rise of Nazism in Germany and surrounding countries and how those lessons need to be heeded today.
George Soros is originally from Hungary in the former USSR and has a great deal of experience with both the German Holocaust and the incredible repression and torture in Soviet Russia. His goal is to warn people that it can happen here and him and like minded donors want to stop that from happening again.
Self reflection will be incredibly high on the agenda at the Democratic Alliance meeting on politico.com. While Democrats expected a landslide victory it did not appear. This may call into question the so called rising latino movement which was supposed to deliver millions of new votes. Losses of traditional Democratic Party voters in the rust belt will also be an incredibly hot topic of conversation and debate.
Another huge obstacle at this meeting is going to be reaching a consensus for the way the Democratic Party should go. The potential incoming DNC chair, Keith Ellison will be attending and very likely being vetted by many high ranking party members and donors on project-syndicate.org. If the Democrats decide to go that way they will be doubling down on much of the accelerations policies that have driven the Democratic Party since the election of Barack Obama in 2008.
Regardless of what is decided at the meeting Democrats have an uphill battle for at least the next two years. Luckily they have many powerful progressive donors at http://www.nybooks.com/articles/2014/11/20/wake-up-europe/ in their corner which should give them more than a fighting chance. The deep pockets of George Soros should go a long way to moving the progressive agenda forward.
